Having trouble sleeping? Here’s how to sleep like a baby

Many are the times we have felt exhausted and drained after a bout of physical or mental exertion activity. As most of us can attest, taking some time to rest has been wonderfully therapeutic and left us feeling refreshed and invigorated.

However, the sad fact is that a lot of us are not getting as much sleep as we should. Back in 2016, a study conducted by CDC found that 1 in 3 American adults were not getting the recommended minimum of 7 hours of sleep daily.

Sleep and rest play a pivotal role in our lives and functioning as human beings. An obvious benefit is that sleep restores our energy. It also maintains our mental focus and improves our memory, ensuring that we remain productive. Furthermore, getting enough quality sleep significantly reduces your risk of getting diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's.

Budget Pharmacy is here to ensure that you get all the benefits of getting enough rest. Here are some of the tips that you can use:

  • Switch off your electronic devices at least an hour before bed. This will prime you for sleep.

  • Sleep in a dark room. Artificial lighting depresses your body's production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for your sleep pattern. You may also use ear plugs to avoid sound disturbances while you sleep.

  • Try to establish a regular sleep pattern, sleeping at the same hour every day.

  • Do not take caffeine or energy drinks prior to going to bed as these will leave you overly stimulated and unable to sleep well.

  • Avoid large meals just before bedtime. Try to have a modest-sized meal at least 3-4 hours before bed. Moreover, cut down on refined carbohydrates. A healthy diet translates to improved sleep quality.

  • Take up some aerobic exercise activity such as walking, jogging or cycling. Aerobic exercise has been found to improve the quality of sleep.

  • Seek the advice of a sleep specialist or a cognitive behavioral therapist (CBT). CBT has been found to be effective in combating sleep problems.
